Beller Kirche, Gothic church ruin in Eckelsheim, Germany
Beller Kirche is a Gothic building standing about 300 meters south of Eckelsheim in open countryside. The structure displays characteristic Gothic features including pointed arches and large window openings that once contained colored glass panes.
Construction of the church began before 1490 with a chapel and altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The main nave was completed by 1519, as marked by the inscription on the west portal.
The church once served as the focal point for a regional market fair held across the surrounding fields until the early 1900s. Visitors can still sense how this location drew people from the wider area together.
The location is easily accessible on foot and can be viewed from the exterior. A maintenance organization cares for the building and hosts cultural events there regularly.
The building was constructed above an underground spring called Beller Brünnchen, with foundations set on compacted sand. This location was strategically selected to take advantage of the reliable water source.
