Battert, Mountain summit in Baden-Baden, Germany.
Battert is a mountain summit on the western edge of the Northern Black Forest near Baden-Baden, marked by striking red sandstone cliffs and thick forest coverage. The terrain features more than a hundred climbing routes of varying difficulty spread across multiple rock formations.
The area saw settlement dating back to Celtic times, evidenced by circular ramparts along the ridge. Later, medieval castle ruins stood on the western slopes, and the first climbing routes were not established until the late 1800s.
The red sandstone cliffs have long drawn people seeking outdoor challenge and connection with nature. Today, climbers from across the region gather here regularly, making it a living center for the climbing community.
The mountain is reachable by train to Baden-Baden followed by bus to Altes Schloss, with marked trails branching out to the climbing areas. Dry conditions are best for visiting, as the rocks become slippery after rain.
The Battertfelsen nature reserve is home to rare insects, reptiles, and birds of prey including peregrine falcons that nest in the rock cliffs. The craggy terrain provides nesting sites for species found nowhere else in the region.
