Castra Gelduba

The Castra Gelduba fort encompasses extensive stone foundations and defensive structures positioned along the Lower German Limes near the Rhine River.

Built after 69 AD following the Batavian revolt, the fort underwent multiple construction phases, transforming from wooden structures to stone fortifications by the second century.

The fort served as a strategic base for the Roman cavalry unit Cohors II Varcinorum equitata, controlling trade routes between Roman territories and Germanic regions.

Visitors can examine archaeological findings from the fort at the Museumszentrum Burg Linn, which displays numerous artifacts including weapons, coins, and military equipment.

Excavations revealed 300 horse skeletons from a major battle, providing direct archaeological evidence of the conflict described by Roman historian Tacitus.
