Castra Gelduba, Roman military fort in Krefeld, Germany

Castra Gelduba is a Roman military fort in Krefeld featuring stone foundations and defensive structures along the Lower Rhine Limes near the Rhine River. The site encompasses the remains of various functional areas that supported the garrison and its operations.

The fort was built after 69 AD in response to the Batavian revolt and underwent several reconstruction phases as military needs changed. Structures evolved from wooden construction to solid stone fortifications during the 2nd century.

The fort housed a mounted cavalry unit tasked with overseeing trade routes between Roman and Germanic territories. This military role shaped the cultural and economic exchanges at this important frontier.

Archaeological finds from the fort are displayed at the Museumszentrum Burg Linn, where weapons, coins, and military equipment tell the story of the site. The museum provides the best way to understand the artifacts, as the actual excavation site has limited visibility.

Excavations revealed the remains of approximately 300 horses, providing direct archaeological evidence for events described by Roman historian Tacitus. These findings create a rare connection between physical remains and ancient written accounts.
