Botanischer Garten Universität Rostock, University botanical garden in Rostock, Germany
The Botanischer Garten Universität Rostock is a garden spanning around 7.8 hectares and holding over 10,000 plant species. It is organized into separate sections including alpine areas, tree collections, dune environments, and arranged planting beds.
The University of Rostock founded its first botanical garden in 1885 on Doberaner Straße. The facility was relocated to its present location between 1935 and 1939.
The garden functions as an educational resource, housing a herbarium of around 80,000 specimens gathered by respected botanists since the 1800s. This collection demonstrates plant diversity and allows visitors to see the work of botanical research firsthand.
The garden is open on most days except Mondays during the warmer months, with greenhouse tours offered Monday through Thursday during business hours. Set aside time to walk through different sections, as each area features distinct plants and settings.
The systematic garden displays around 340 plant species in 48 uniform beds of 8 square meters each, organized according to how plants are related to one another. This arrangement visually demonstrates the evolutionary connections between different plant groups.
