Haus der Freundschaft, Architectural heritage monument in Rostock, Germany
Haus der Freundschaft is an architectural heritage building in Rostock featuring a distinctive neo-Gothic extension with a stepped gable designed in the 1890s. Architect Gotthilf Möckel created the striking facade that defines the structure today.
The building opened in 1864 as Steinbecks Keller, featuring a panoramic tower and a hall with a stage. It used natural ice from the Warnow River for cellar cooling, a common practice of that era.
The building's name reflects its past role as a space for cultural exchange during the post-war period. Today, visitors can see how it functioned as a gathering place for dialogue.
The building now functions as an educational and cultural center run by the Peter Weiss House Association since 2009. Visitors can explore the spaces during events and youth programs held throughout the year.
The 1975-1977 renovation introduced artistic elements, including a wall-sized map of the Soviet Union. This creative installation remains visible inside the building today.
