Blauer Steinbruch, Nature reserve in Ehingen, Germany.
This 5.2-hectare protected area contains a former quarry with a lake covering one hectare of the total surface.
From 1890 to 1925, the quarry supplied limestone to the Ehingen cement factory, which was the largest cement producer in the Kingdom of Württemberg.
The name derives from the blue color of the water in the quarry, caused by cement marl extraction and high clay content.
The nature reserve features several hiking trails of different lengths, ranging from 4 kilometers to 16 kilometers around the quarry area.
Eight different amphibian species inhabit the lake, while orchid varieties, including the fly orchid and marsh helleborine, grow on the slopes.
