St. Mary's Cathedral, Gothic cathedral in St. Georg, Hamburg, Germany
St. Mary's Cathedral is a Catholic church built in the Neo-Gothic style in the St. Georg district of Hamburg. The main facade features two slender pointed towers and a large rose window made of red brick, which sits above the main entrance.
Arnold Guldenpfennig designed the building in the late 19th century for the growing Catholic community in Hamburg. Construction began in 1889 and was completed four years later.
The name honours the Virgin Mary, who serves as the patron saint of this church. Worshippers gather here for services where the congregation sings and prays together, while the organ fills the space with solemn sound.
Visitors can enter the interior during opening hours and view the architecture up close. A columbarium inside offers parishioners a resting place for cremated remains since 2012.
A forearm reliquary of Saint Ansgar, transferred from Hildesheim Cathedral in 2011, rests here in a precious container. This relic recalls the missionary who preached in northern Germany and Scandinavia during the 9th century.
