Steinwald

Steinwald is a nature reserve located between the Fichtelgebirge and Upper Palatinate Forest, characterized by granite rock formations and mixed coniferous woodlands. The area spans a large expanse of varied terrain with different forest types throughout.

The granite rocks of Steinwald formed approximately 290 million years ago and established the region's geological foundation. The mineral deposits from these rocks later prompted mining development across northern Bavaria.

Local people maintain November customs of decorating graves with candles and sharing regional stories by candlelight. This tradition brings the community together and keeps local heritage alive in everyday practice.

The main peak features the Oberpfalz Tower, which offers panoramic views across the entire reserve and surrounding regions. This tower serves as a helpful landmark for visitors exploring the area's diverse landscapes.

Over millions of years, wind and weather have sculpted distinctive rock formations such as the Robber Rocks, Bird Rocks, and Bath Rocks. These shaped stone structures are scattered across the landscape and give the reserve its recognizable character.
