Harkortsee

The Harkortsee is a reservoir that spans across three municipalities in the Ruhr Valley region. The water body is surrounded by green spaces and forest areas that create a natural setting for recreation.

The reservoir was built in 1931 to manage water resources for the region. Since then, it has served as a key infrastructure for water supply and flood management.

The reservoir serves as a gathering point for local residents who participate in water activities and spend time along its banks.

Visitors can reach the reservoir from the surrounding towns through several entry points along the shores. The paths are well-marked and allow for different types of exploration such as walking or cycling.

The lake bed underwent major restoration work with significant sediment removal to improve water quality. These efforts also created new spawning areas for fish and nesting habitats for waterfowl.
