Großer Arbersee, Glacial lake in Bayerisch Eisenstein, Germany
The Großer Arbersee is a glacial lake in the mountains near Bayerisch Eisenstein, stretching about 900 meters long and 230 meters wide. The water sits at roughly 919 meters elevation and is surrounded by steep, forested slopes that rise on several sides.
The lake formed during the last Ice Age when glacial movement carved a deep basin into the landscape. The steep rock walls surrounding the water are the result of these ice-age processes that shaped the mountains thousands of years ago.
The shore hosts a restaurant serving regional Bavarian cuisine, drawing visitors who want to taste local specialties while enjoying the water view. It serves as a gathering place where people experience both nature and food traditions together.
A walking path circles the lake with information signs explaining the plants and animals you see along the way, and pedal boats are available for rent. The route is easy to walk and offers views of the water throughout, with spots to stop and rest or learn more at any point.
The shore features a moorland that floats on the water but remains unanchored to the lake bottom, creating a distinct ecological system. This floating bog covers about two hectares and supports plant species that are otherwise uncommon in this region.
