Kemenate

Kemenate is a medieval castle located on a hilltop in the Franconian Jura, consisting of a central mound and a fortified outer courtyard. The entire site displays the layered defensive design common to fortifications of this era.

The castle was built around 1122 and served as a refuge for the local population during the medieval period. Its construction followed established fortification principles used throughout the region.

The castle structure represents medieval architectural methods of southern Germany, particularly demonstrating the integration of motte and bailey design principles.

The ruins can be reached via marked hiking trails through the Franconian Jura, which also offer views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time to climb the hill and explore the site thoroughly.

The central mound retains its oval original shape despite being leveled over centuries. The outer rampart curves in a horseshoe form around the core, reinforcing the distinctive character of the fortification.
