Burg Alt-Morungen, Medieval castle ruins in Sangerhausen, Germany
The remains of Alt-Morungen Castle stand on a rocky promontory at 325 meters elevation, with a trapezoidal layout measuring 20 by 30 meters.
The castle dates back to the early 11th century when Count Goswin the Elder of Leige granted it as a dowry to his daughter Sigena upon her marriage.
The castle site holds connections to Heinrich von Morungen, a medieval German lyric poet who composed Minnelieder during the 12th century.
The castle grounds feature visible sections of the ring wall, foundation remains of a former tower, and defensive trenches carved into the rock.
A natural cave exists at the base of the cliff within the castle's defensive trench system.
