Grünwald Castle, Medieval castle in Grünwald, Germany.
Grünwald Castle is a medieval fortress on a hilltop beside the Isar River, with an irregular rectangular shape, defensive moat, and gate tower. Inside the castle walls sits the Museum Grünwald, which has operated since 1979 as part of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection.
The fortress was built between 1486 and 1487 under master builder Jörg Weikertshausen as a wedding castle for Albert IV and Kunigunde of Austria. Severe damage came in the 17th century when river erosion undermined the hill, though the main tower survived.
The site served as a meeting place for religious leaders that shaped the church's direction in the region. Visitors can sense this important role as they walk through the rooms where such gatherings took place.
Access is possible via a paved path, though the hillside requires some climbing. The museum inside is well marked, and the exhibits showcase finds from different periods of local history.
The Isar River once flowed directly past the castle walls, which explains why this site was chosen for the fortress. Today the river has moved far away, and the entire landscape around the hill looks completely different.
