Burg Liebeneck, Medieval castle ruin in Würm, Germany
Burg Liebeneck stands as a ruin on a mountain ridge above the Würm valley, displaying a 30-meter-high tower with surrounding walls. The layout follows medieval defensive design, with structures adapted to the natural terrain.
The castle was built in the 12th century and first documented in 1236 when it transferred from the lords of Weißenstein to Margrave Rudolf of Baden. The Marggraves used it as a residence for several generations before its later decline.
The ruined walls frame views across the Würm valley, marking a place where history meets the local hiking culture. People visiting today experience the same elevation and sightlines that once served the castle's defensive purpose.
The ruin is accessible only by forest paths, including the Ostweg hiking trail, with considerable elevation gain. An information board on-site explains the layout and helps visitors navigate the different sections.
During the war of 1692, parts of the castle were deliberately destroyed to prevent unauthorized use as a shelter. This intentional damage shaped the ruins seen today.
