Burgruine, Medieval castle ruins in Lichtenberg, Germany
The stone castle stretches across 425 meters on a hilltop, making it the largest castle ruin complex in Germany.
Duke Henry the Lion constructed the fortress around 1180 as a defense point against the Bishopric of Hildesheim and nearby Hohenstaufen estate.
The medieval architecture includes an upper ward with residential structures, a deep well measuring 60 meters, and thick defensive walls.
Visitors can explore the restaurant, beer garden, and hotel facilities while examining the preserved sections of the original castle structure.
The castle changed ownership multiple times during medieval conflicts before cannons destroyed it in 1552, leading to its current ruined state.
