Burg Lindenfels, Medieval castle ruins in Lindenfels, Germany.
Burg Lindenfels is a castle ruin perched on a hilltop overlooking the town and surrounding Odenwald valleys below. The structure displays stone walls and towers that reflect different periods of medieval construction and modification.
The fortress was founded around 1080 under the name Slirburc and expanded dramatically during the 15th century when its Romanesque core developed into a major stronghold. Its decline began in the 18th century when local people began extracting stone from the structure.
The fortress serves as a gathering place for local celebrations and historical reenactments that help residents connect with medieval traditions. Through these events, the castle remains a living part of the community rather than just a ruin.
The ruins are freely accessible year-round and offer commanding views from the hilltop location. Guided tours operate from March through October and are included as part of the Historical City Tour.
The fortress survived multiple wars intact but was gradually dismantled during the 18th century not by military force but by local residents who quarried it for building stone. This unusual form of destruction left it as the fragmentary ruin visible today.
