Castle Linn

Castle Linn is a medieval fortress in Krefeld that stands above the banks of the Groote Maat river, featuring defensive walls, a bailey, and a hunting lodge within its grounds. The complex includes several preserved structures that give visitors an understanding of medieval military architecture and layout.

The fortress was built around 1200 as a stronghold for the Electorate of Cologne and stands as the oldest defensive structure on the Lower Rhine. It remained an important military and territorial asset for centuries throughout the region's shifting power dynamics.

The castle houses a museum displaying findings from Roman times, including gilded objects belonging to Frankish princes. The collection reveals how different cultures shaped the region across centuries.

The castle is accessible on foot or by public transport and features onsite information and signage to help visitors navigate the various areas. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the grounds are uneven and several buildings are connected by pathways with steps.

During Pentecost weekend, the castle grounds transform into a traditional flax market where artisans present handmade goods to thousands of visitors. This yearly event connects old craft traditions with a large modern audience and brings the historic site to life in a special way.
