Museumszentrum Burg Linn

Museumszentrum Burg Linn, Medieval castle museum in Krefeld, Germany.

Description

Museumszentrum Burg Linn is a castle museum housed in a water fortress with battlements, towers, and a moat, located about 5 km east of central Krefeld. The site contains several buildings including a chapel and palace structures that together preserve the fortification's layered past.

History

The castle began in the 12th century when Otto and Gerlachus von Lynn built it and expanded it into one of the largest water fortifications on the Lower Rhine. The site shaped the region for centuries and remained significant across multiple periods.

Culture

The collections display objects from Roman and early medieval graves in the region, including glass vessels and the burial of a Frankish prince. Visitors can see how people lived and were buried here centuries ago.

Practical

Visitors should know that the site consists of different areas that can be explored on foot, with most parts being easily accessible. It is helpful to allow enough time for a complete visit, as both the buildings and the indoor collections deserve attention.

Did you know?

Excavations here uncovered artifacts from the Battle of Gelduba in 69 AD, including weapons and personal items from that conflict. The museum also displays a detailed model of the Roman fortress Gelduba, reconstructing its layout from 200 AD.
