Krefelder Zoo, Municipal zoological garden in Krefeld, Germany
Krefeld Zoo is an animal facility in the city that spans about 14 hectares and offers different areas for primates, big cats, African animals, and tropical birds. The grounds are divided into themed zones that allow visitors to see various geographic habitats.
The zoo opened in 1938 as an educational facility in Grotenburgpark with 40 enclosures housing different animal species. In the 1970s, the facility received its current designation and became a modern center focused on species protection.
The zoo carries Krefeld's name and serves as an important place for school groups and families to observe animals in organized enclosures. Visitors particularly value the facilities for their primate and African savanna sections.
The grounds are relatively flat and fairly easy to navigate for visitors with strollers or in wheelchairs, as the paths are well developed. There are several benches and picnic areas throughout, which makes a longer visit more comfortable.
The Rainforest House has been home to leaf-cutter ants, flower bats, and other tropical animals since 1998, in a special setting that mimics the climate of humid forests. This area stands out from the rest of the grounds and draws many visitors wanting to explore the exotic diversity.
