Villa Merländer

Villa Merländer is a three-story brick building with symmetrical design and classical details located on Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse in Krefeld. Its facade displays large windows and traditional architectural elements typical of early 20th-century residential construction.

Jewish silk merchant Richard Merländer commissioned the villa's construction in 1924, but was forced to sell it during the Nazi period. The building was later repurposed as a documentation center, preserving the memory of these difficult times.

The building now functions as a documentation center where exhibitions explore National Socialism and its local impact through displays and educational activities. Visitors engage with how this house itself became intertwined with that historical period.

Inside the villa are wall paintings by expressionist artist Heinrich Campendonk that were rediscovered during renovation work. These rare artworks reveal an unexpected artistic layer within the building's history.
