Kunstmuseen Krefeld, Art museum complex in Krefeld, Germany.
Kunstmuseen Krefeld is a museum complex with three separate exhibition spaces: the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in the city center and two modern villas called Haus Lange and Haus Esters located in the Bockum neighborhood. Together, these venues hold around 24,000 artworks spanning various periods and styles.
The museum began in 1897 as the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, establishing the foundation for what would become a larger complex. Later, two residential villas designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe were added to the ensemble.
The collection spans from medieval times to the present day, featuring movements like Art Nouveau, Impressionism, and Rhenish Expressionism that shaped European art. These artworks reflect how different periods approached creativity and expression in distinct ways.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00, though Haus Lange and Haus Esters are only accessible during special exhibitions. Check ahead to confirm which spaces will be open when you plan your visit.
In 2022, the institution received the Museum of the Year award from the German chapter of the International Association of Art Critics. The honor recognized its innovative approach to bringing different art forms and disciplines together in conversation.
