Seidenweberhaus, multi-purpose event venue and community centre in Krefeld, Germany
The Seidenweberhaus is a multi-purpose hall and community center in Krefeld, built in 1976 in brutalist style and located at Theaterplatz. The hexagonal building contains three halls with combined capacity for around 1,400 visitors and hosts concerts, theater, conferences, and private events.
The building emerged from discussions beginning in the 1940s about creating a new cultural venue, with plans becoming concrete in the 1970s. The foundation stone was laid in 1972 and it opened in 1976, quickly becoming an established cultural location for the city.
The building's name references Krefeld's historical silk-weaving tradition that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. This connection ties the space to the city's past as a major center for silk and velvet production.
The location is centrally situated at Theaterplatz and easily accessible on foot, with good public transport connections and nearby parking. It is advisable to check the event calendar in advance and dress appropriately depending on the type of event, since the venue hosts diverse programs ranging from concerts to conferences.
The building's facade was enhanced in 2021 by an international art project called Silk City Gallery featuring graffiti and murals, giving the brutalist structure a colorful modern appearance. This project transformed the plain building into a walkable art gallery and attracted both art fans and architecture enthusiasts.
