Burg Sichelnstein, Medieval castle ruin in Staufenberg, Germany
Burg Sichelnstein is a medieval castle ruin in a wooded area above Staufenberg. The stone walls form a horseshoe-shaped structure rising roughly 7 to 10 meters (23 to 33 feet) above the Ingelheilmbach valley, with an eastern entrance portal and a bridge spanning the former moat still visible today.
The castle was established after 933 and passed through several owners, including Duke Otto and various Hessian landgraves. It declined during the Thirty Years War and was subsequently abandoned.
The ruins sit within a wooded area above the village, offering views across the surrounding landscape. Visitors can explore the old walls and appreciate the natural setting that now defines the location.
The grounds are easily accessible and suit a walk through the wooded area. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and respect the paths, as some sections are uneven.
After the castle was abandoned, local people dismantled and reused stones from the walls to build houses in the nearby area. This practice shows how the community gave the structure a second life in their own homes.
