Hühnerfeld, Nature reserve in Staufenberg, Germany.
Hühnerfeld is a nature reserve covering about 30 hectares of moorland in the Kaufunger Wald between two hills at elevations between 380 and 460 meters. A wooden boardwalk provides the main access through this sensitive ecosystem.
The area became a protected reserve in 1968 after the moorland faced damage from drainage efforts intended to support forestry following World War II. This protection halted further environmental decline in this fragile landscape.
The name comes from Hünenfeld, referring to the field that was once part of agricultural traditions in the area. Visitors can see how human activity has shaped and maintained the landscape over time.
The boardwalk built in 2015 is the main way to explore this protected area and prevents damage to the sensitive moorland. The path is easy to follow and lets visitors reach different sections on foot.
Icelandic horses and cattle graze throughout the reserve to maintain the open landscape and create room for rare plants to grow. These animals are essential to preserving the moorland and visitors often spot them during walks.
