Kleiner Steinberg

Kleiner Steinberg, Mountain summit in Hann. Münden, Germany.

Kleiner Steinberg is a mountain summit in the Kaufunger Wald region that rises to 541.9 meters and is covered by dense forest. Basalt formations define the geological character of the hill and its surrounding area.

From 1736 to 1961, the mountain was the site of intensive mining operations that extracted brown coal and basalt. This long industrial period left lasting marks on the landscape that are still visible today.

The forest education center at the former mining administration building teaches visitors about the region's woodland ecosystems and natural resources today. The place shows how human activity shaped the landscape and how it is now being restored and protected.

You can access the trails from parking areas near the forest education center or the village of Steinrode, with multiple route options available. The paths offer varying levels of difficulty, so hikers can choose according to their fitness and experience.

The old mining pits have transformed into the Steinbergseen, a series of small lakes scattered around the mountain base. These lakes create diverse habitats and show how nature reclaims industrial areas over time.
