Burg Wachenheim, also called Oberburg, centres on a Gothic residential tower built around 1470/71. The rectangular tower measures 11 by 8 metres, rises six full storeys above a vaulted cellar and is topped by a hipped roof; a half-round stair turret reaches the third floor. A side wing dates from 1572, the oldest farm building from 1617, and a neo-Gothic villa-like house was added in 1901.

The castle first appeared in written records in 1324 when Knight Dietz von Wachenheim transferred feudal rights to the Count Palatine. The Gothic keep was constructed around 1470, becoming the defining architectural feature of the complex that endures today.

The complex is also called Schlossgut Lüll after the family that acquired it in 1925 and still runs it as a winery estate. The name Wachenheim recurs in the region, so the estate is distinguished from the Wachtenburg and from the Schloss Wachenheim sparkling-wine cellar in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße. A baroque garden house stands within the walled park.

The complex now operates as a winery and event venue, which means visitor access varies depending on private celebrations and scheduled activities. Check ahead to learn when the grounds are open to the public, as special events may restrict certain areas during your visit.
