Friedberg, Administrative district in Hesse, Germany
Friedberg is an administrative district in the north of Hesse, bordering the Frankfurt metropolitan area and covering several towns and municipalities. The district takes its name from the town of Friedberg, which serves as its administrative center.
The district of Friedberg was created in 1832 as part of a reorganization of the administrative structure of Hesse. Since then, territorial reforms have changed its boundaries several times, but the core around the town of Friedberg has remained.
The area around Friedberg is known for its medieval castle, which stands on a hill above the town and is visible from a long distance. The castle is not just a monument but a living place, as people still reside within its walls, making it one of the largest inhabited castle settlements in Germany.
The district sits just north of Frankfurt and is well connected by commuter rail, making it easy to reach from the city. A car is useful for exploring the smaller municipalities away from the main rail lines.
After the Ray Barracks closed in 2007, a former US military base in Friedberg, the site was turned into a new residential area with parks and housing. Elvis Presley was stationed at this base in the late 1950s during his military service.
