Bürgergärten, Sculpture garden in Old City, Lübeck, Germany
The Bürgergärten is a sculpture garden in Lübeck's Old City that links multiple private gardens behind the classical facades along Königstrasse. It extends from the Holy Spirit Hospital to the Behnhaus Museum and uses pathways through walls and fences to create a unified park space.
The garden was established in 1981 and transformed isolated private gardens into a connected park through a new pathway system. This change made private spaces accessible to the public for the first time and opened a new way to discover the hidden side of the Old City.
Bronze and granite figures throughout the space display works by regional artists spanning different decades. As you walk, these sculptures blend into the garden design and shape how the space feels.
The garden is accessible from several points along Königstrasse, allowing flexible exploration. The pathways are well marked and the layout is relatively flat, making for a leisurely walk.
A 1966 bungalow designed by architect Christoph Deecke stands in the garden and still serves as a rehearsal space for the Lübeck Boys' Choir. This unexpected modern building amid the classical Old City shows how different eras fit together in this space.
