Schiffergesellschaft, Maritime guild house and restaurant in Lübeck, Germany
The Schiffergesellschaft is a brick Renaissance guild house on Breite Strasse in Lübeck's old town. The building contains large dining halls with long wooden tables, ship models hanging from the ceiling, exposed wooden beams, and maritime objects covering the walls.
The building was completed in 1535, while the St. Nicholas Brotherhood behind it had been founded in 1401 to support seafarers and their families during the Hanseatic period. Over the following centuries, the brotherhood grew into a steady part of Lübeck's port life.
The long wooden tables in the dining halls still follow the old arrangement where captains sat apart by sailing route and language. Anyone who walks through the room can still read this order in the way the space is laid out.
The building sits on Breite Strasse in Lübeck's old town and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. Those planning to eat inside should check in advance, as table availability can vary depending on the time of year.
The cellar of the building once housed around 50 people who were asked only to pray for seafarers in return for shelter. This quiet arrangement shows how the brotherhood helped people in need without asking for money.
