Overbeck-Gesellschaft, Art exhibition pavilion in Lübeck, Germany
The Overbeck-Gesellschaft is an art hall featuring three large exhibition rooms housed in a garden pavilion on Königstraße 11 in Lübeck. The building looks out toward the sculpture garden of the adjacent Behnhaus Museum.
The Overbeck-Gesellschaft was founded in 1918 to promote art education and public understanding of modern art following World War I. The current building was constructed in 1930 from a design by architect Wilhelm Bräck in the modernist style.
Located next to the Behnhaus, this institution serves as a space where contemporary artistic conversations take place. The building hosts exhibitions that explore current social questions through individual artists and collaborative projects.
The pavilion is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and sits directly beside the Behnhaus Museum. Visitors should know that wheelchair access is limited and the entrance has steps.
The pavilion was designed as a standalone art structure rather than a traditional museum extension. This independence allowed the space to develop its own exhibition program distinct from the main museum.
