Charlottensee, Artificial lake in Bad Iburg, Germany
Charlottensee is a small artificial lake in the spa park of Bad Iburg, at the foot of the castle hill in Lower Saxony, Germany. A small island was added to the lake in 1992 and is clearly visible from the surrounding paths.
The lake was dug in 1932 and 1933 by labor corps workers who transformed the site of an old, silted-up mill pond. The mill that once stood there was built by the prince-bishop and now serves as a guesthouse.
In winter, when the ice is thick enough, many people come to skate on the frozen surface of the lake. In summer, small boats can be rented, and visitors drift quietly across the water.
The lake sits inside the spa park and is surrounded by easy walking paths that form a simple loop around the water. The ground is flat with no steep sections, which makes the circuit comfortable for most visitors.
The lake is named after Sophie Charlotte, who was born in 1668 at Iburg Castle and later became Queen in Prussia. The road that once ran along the shore under the name Rennbahn now bears the name Charlottenburger Ring.
