Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works

Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works is a railway repair facility in Thuringia that operates with specialized equipment and machinery across an extensive industrial site. The complex includes several workshop halls, track systems and technical installations where locomotives are disassembled, inspected and reassembled.

The facility began operations in 1914 and was initially managed by Deutsche Reichsbahn. Over the following decades, the site underwent several rebuilds and expansions to meet the changing demands of railway traffic.

The workshop carries a name that directly describes its technical function and still preserves the connection to the steam era today. Visitors can observe skilled workers using traditional craft techniques while passing on knowledge that remains alive in only a few facilities.

The site sits near the town center and can be reached on foot from the railway station. Guided tours are offered regularly, allowing interested visitors to gain insight into ongoing work.

The site is the only facility on the European mainland capable of manufacturing new boiler bodies according to current regulations. This capability allows the workshop to keep historic locomotives operational long-term rather than simply restoring them.
