German Oil Museum

The German Oil Museum is a technology museum set on a former oil field in Wietze, displaying drilling equipment, pumping systems, and measurement devices from different periods. The site includes both indoor exhibits and outdoor installations that show how oil extraction operated in practice.

The museum occupies the site of the former Devil's Island oilfield, where the first German oil drilling began in 1859 and sparked industrial growth in the region. Operations at this location shaped the local economy for many decades afterward.

The wooden derricks and transport equipment scattered across the grounds reflect how industrial innovation shaped this region's identity and work culture. Visitors can see how ordinary tools became symbols of regional pride and economic change.

The museum offers guided tours and requires time to explore both indoor exhibits and the outdoor site with its large installations. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are extensive and involve walking between different display areas.

The site features an original Wintershall drilling tower from 1961 that stands roughly 54 meters tall and underwent complete renovation. This tower serves as a tangible reminder of the engineering achievements of that era and ranks among the most notable structures on the grounds.
