Immerath, Former village district in Erkelenz, Germany
Immerath was a village district of Erkelenz located in the fertile Erkelenzer Börde region, a farming area known for its productive soil. The community occupied several square kilometers and formed a distinct neighborhood within the larger municipality until its eventual disappearance.
The village was first recorded in 1144 under the name Emundrode and experienced several name changes over the centuries. By the early 2000s, it faced displacement due to the expansion of nearby lignite mining operations.
The Pfarrkirche St. Lambertus, built between 1888 and 1891, stood as the central religious structure until its demolition in 2018.
The location is no longer inhabited and serves as a memorial site to document the disappearance of communities due to resource extraction. Visitors can walk the area today, though they should be aware of proximity to ongoing mining operations in the region.
A commemorative site now marks where the village stood, featuring a reconstructed church that honors the lost community. This reconstruction preserves the memory of a place that disappeared due to mining expansion.
