Vogtlandsee, lake in Vogtlandkreis, Saxony, Germany
Vogtlandsee is an artificial reservoir in Vogtlandkreis covering about 6 hectares and surrounded by forest. The lake sits on moorland substrate, which creates acidic water that prevents fish from living here.
The lake was constructed between 1935 and 1937 to provide flood protection through a dam approximately 7 meters high. Today the structure also serves water management purposes for surrounding regions.
Locals and visitors regard this reservoir as a quiet escape into nature where daily life fades away. The moorland surroundings and clear water characterize the place and make it special for anyone seeking stillness and the outdoors.
The lake is open year-round and can be reached from a parking area at Waldpark Grünheide, from which a flat 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) path leads to the water. The trail is also accessible for people with mobility limitations and offers easy access with no admission fee.
A small island in the northern part of the lake is separated from shore by only a narrow strip of water and its few meters width creates a surprising feature of this quiet body of water. The moorland soil has also produced unusual dragonfly species like the Hairy Dragonfly, which can be seen in the reed areas.
