St. Jakob

St. Jakob is a brick chapel built in the Gothic style, featuring a distinctive southwest gable wall and small sacrament niches within its roughly 10-meter tall structure. The building displays characteristic details of its era, including consecration crosses marked on the walls.

The chapel was built in 1315 as part of a hospital complex designed to serve travelers and pilgrims. In 1892 it underwent a major relocation, moving 11 meters west to make way for road expansion in the growing city.

The chapel once served as a stopping point for travelers passing through the city, offering them a place to pray when they could not enter the main settlement. It provided spiritual comfort to those on long journeys.

The structure now functions as an art studio and exhibition space under the management of the Wredowsche Zeichenschule foundation. You can visit during events such as readings and concerts that are regularly held here throughout the year.

Locals know this structure as the 'Verrückte Kapelle' or Crazy Chapel, a name that stems from its remarkable 1892 relocation as a complete building. A plaque on the structure commemorates this extraordinary engineering feat that preserved the chapel for future generations.
