St. Katharinen, Gothic church in Neustadt, Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany
St. Katharinen is a brick church in the Neustadt section of Brandenburg an der Havel, decorated with elaborate terracotta sculptures and ornamental brickwork patterns on its exterior. The nave and choir form a spacious, unified interior volume that allows for clear sight lines throughout the church.
This church replaced an earlier fieldstone structure in 1395 and began construction after 1381 using Brick Gothic style. Architect Hinrich Brunsberg from Szczecin led the design with characteristic elements of the regional building tradition.
The church takes its name from Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a patron saint of scholars and students. Inside, visitors can see ornate details and religious artwork that reflect the building's spiritual role in the city's intellectual life.
Access is from the Neustadt side where the main facade is fully visible. Afternoon light provides the best views of the fine brickwork and terracotta details on the exterior.
In December 1632, Swedish King Gustav Adolf lay in state here while awaiting the arrival of his queen. This historical moment brought European attention to the church for a brief period.
