Europahaus, High-rise building at Kurt-Schumacher-Platz in Bochum-Mitte, Germany.
Europahaus is an office tower on Kurt-Schumacher-Platz in Bochum with 16 floors rising prominently above the square. A four-story wing extends toward Huestraße, where today a medical center with several practices occupies the ground floor areas.
The tower was built between 1961 and 1962 following designs by Bochum architect Roman Reiser. Its construction coincided with post-war rebuilding efforts across West Germany.
The building represents how Bochum transformed after the war into a modern city through vertical construction. Today it shows how office towers shaped daily urban life and the way people move through the city center.
The building is easy to spot from the square and sits centrally for exploring the train station or city center. Medical services at street level are accessible to visitors who need healthcare consultation.
For many decades a spinning Mercedes star sat atop the roof as a recognizable symbol of Bochum's skyline. This distinctive rooftop feature was only removed in 2024, having shaped the city's appearance for generations.
