Warnfriedkirche, Gothic church in Osteel, Germany
The Warnfriedkirche is a brick church building in Osteel with a rectangular layout, a single nave, and a tower on the west side. Inside, sturdy multi-staged wall supports carry a flat wooden ceiling throughout the main space.
Construction started in the 13th century and changes were made during the 14th century, but major renovations in 1830 removed the crossing and chancel. These alterations significantly transformed the building's original structure.
The church is named after Saint Warnfried, an early Christian missionary to this region, and locals gather here for regular worship and special prayer times. The interior reflects the simple character of a rural place of worship that has welcomed generations of believers.
A visit is best during daylight hours when natural light flows through the windows and the interior is clearly visible. The church sits in central Osteel and is easily reached on foot.
Inside sits a two-manual organ built by Edo Evers in 1619, one of the oldest surviving instruments in East Frisia. This instrument stands as both a musical treasure and a rare example of the organ-building craft from that era.
