Kirchenruine St. Laurentius

Kirchenruine St. Laurentius in Altmünden features thick stone walls displaying both Romanesque and Gothic characteristics that reflect different building phases. The site includes a contemporary art installation made of two granite stones, with the upper one designed to collect rainwater and serve as an artistic baptismal font.

The original church was built during the medieval period and underwent several construction phases reflected in its architectural styles. During the Thirty Years' War, its stones were removed for other building projects, leading to its progressive decay.

The site is named after Saint Lawrence and now blends historical remains with contemporary art through a modern installation. Visitors can observe how this place has found new meaning while maintaining its connection to the medieval community.

The ruins are located in the old town district and are easily accessible on foot with open access to the grounds. Visitors should note it is an outdoor site, so appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions is recommended.

The ruins were discovered by chance during construction work in the 1990s when excavation revealed foundations hidden beneath the ground. Archaeological digs unexpectedly uncovered medieval coins, pottery, and animal remains from centuries past.
