Hüvener Mühle, Combined watermill and windmill in Hüven, Germany
Hüvener Mühle is a combined watermill and windmill in Hüven that stands along the Mittelradde River. The building uses both a water wheel driven by the river and wind sails mounted on its roof to grind grain.
This mill first appeared in records in 1534 as a watermill and was rebuilt following a fire in 1801. Wind power was added to it in 1852 to keep operations running during periods when the river level dropped.
The inscription above the entrance reflects local values of hospitality and welcomes those who approach. It shows how openness and acceptance were woven into daily life here.
The mill sits in an accessible location by the river and is reachable on foot from the village center. Visitors can watch the grinding process in action and should wear sturdy shoes since walkways and stairs inside can be uneven.
This is one of the last fully functioning buildings of its kind in Europe. The dual system allowed work to continue throughout the year regardless of whether water or wind was available.
