The Elfenstein stands 475 meters tall in the northern foothills of the Harz Mountains, featuring distinct granite rock formations above Bad Harzburg.
First documented in 1578 as Elwenstein, archaeological excavations near the northeastern slope revealed Germanic settlements and burial sites from 1857.
Local myths suggest the rocky formations of Elfenstein served as dwelling places for elves and supernatural beings during medieval times.
The summit features checkpoint number 120 of the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network, with equipped steps leading to the top viewing point.
The granite peak provides viewing spots of Bad Harzburg and northern Harz Foreland, while standing between Gläsecke and Bleiche valleys.
