Kluterthöhle, Limestone cave system in Ennepetal, Germany.

The Kluterthöhle is a limestone cave system with more than 380 underground passages, subterranean lakes, and chambers throughout its natural interior. The walls display fossilized marine organisms scattered across the stone, telling the story of the location's ancient past.

The cave formed roughly 385 million years ago when this region was a tropical sea with extensive coral reefs. The system preserves one of Europe's most complete coral reef formations from that distant period.

The cave hosts concerts and seasonal celebrations that bring people together in the underground chambers and blend local traditions with the natural setting. Visitors experience music and nature combined in a way that is rare to find elsewhere.

The pathways through the cave are walkable, but there are stairs and uneven areas to watch for. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring a light jacket, as it is cool and sometimes damp underground.

The underground environment has therapeutic effects for respiratory conditions, which is why it has been officially recognized as a climate therapy location since 1954. This natural healing property gives the cave medical value alongside its geological importance.
