Kruiner Tunnel, Combined railway and road tunnel in Gevelsberg, Germany
Kruiner Tunnel is a dual-purpose structure in Gevelsberg that combines railway and road traffic under one building. The structure crosses an embankment of the Elberfeld-Dortmund railway line south of the city center and accommodates both the Ennepetalbahn railway and state road L700.
The tunnel was built after 1882 as part of growing railway infrastructure between Elberfeld and Dortmund. Later a roadway was added to allow vehicle traffic to pass under the same structure.
The tunnel shows how railway and road traffic share the same structure, a practical solution developed for this area. Visitors can observe how both forms of transport operate side by side today.
The structure is easy to view from outside and accessible from state road L700, where vehicles and trains operate. Visitors should watch for signals that indicate when trains are coming, as operations affect both forms of traffic.
The structure shows a rare solution from the 19th century where two completely different forms of traffic, railway and road, operate side by side in the same tunnel. This dual-use approach was an innovative answer to space constraints in the region at that time.
