Hammermuseum Frankfurt, Hammer museum in Bahnhofsviertel district, Frankfurt, Germany
The Hammermuseum Frankfurt occupied the first floor of a cobbler's shop on Münchener Straße 36 and displayed over 2,500 hammers in various sizes and forms. The collection ranged from everyday tools to specialized variants used in different crafts.
Oskar Mahler founded the museum in 2005 and built one of Germany's largest hammer collections during the following years. The exhibition closed in 2019, ending the project.
Artists like Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp used hammers as artistic material, and their works were displayed alongside traditional tools. The collection showed how this everyday object took on new meaning in modern art.
The historic building could accommodate only about 15 visitors at a time due to its structural limitations. This intimate space made for a personal experience while exploring the exhibits.
Many hammers in the collection came from unclear periods and their specific functions remained mysterious. Even experts could not always explain what these specialized tools were originally used for.
