Gewerkschaftshaus, Office building in Gutleutviertel, Frankfurt, Germany
The Gewerkschaftshaus is a nine-story office building with a T-shaped floor plan located near Frankfurt Central Station. Its steel-frame construction with grid-patterned facade continues to define the character of the Gutleutviertel area.
The building was completed in 1931 as a headquarters for trade union organizations. After being seized by the Nazi regime in 1933, it was returned to the labor movement in 1946.
The building's name reflects its longtime dedication to labor organizations and their mission. Today visitors can observe how the clean lines and generous windows demonstrate how modernist thinking shaped workplace design in the interwar period.
The building sits close to the central station and is easily accessible by public transportation. Note that as an active office building, interior access may be limited to special events or organized tours.
When completed, this structure ranked as Frankfurt's second-tallest office building, surpassed only by the I.G. Farben Building. This position as the city's most modern administrative structure of its era highlights its importance in local architectural history.
