Der Hafenarbeiter, Bronze statue at Friedensbrücke, Frankfurt, Germany.
The Hafenarbeiter is a bronze statue at Friedensbrücke that portrays a worker in protective garments with a hood shielding against coal dust. The figure stands slightly larger than life size and shows detailed work in the clothing and posture of the laborer.
The statue was created in 1890 by Belgian sculptor Constantin Meunier and commemorates the former Frankfurt West Harbor. That harbor operated from 1885 to 1999 and shaped the city's economy and life for over a century.
The name refers to the dock workers who once labored at this location and shaped the city's character. The figure portrays a man in work clothes and conveys how these workers lived and toiled day after day.
The statue is located at the southern end of Friedensbrücke and is easily reached by various pedestrian paths in the area. The location sits in a well-accessible spot ideal for a leisurely walk along the waterfront.
The sculpture was funded by industrialist Leo Gans, who provided 150,000 gold marks for this work and another bronze sculpture. This generous donation was a notable gesture of support for art and remembrance of dock workers at that time.
