Gutleutkirche, Modern church in Gutleutviertel district, Frankfurt, Germany
Gutleutkirche is a modern church built from concrete in Frankfurt with a bell tower that rises over 26 meters high. The interior features 28 small square stained glass windows arranged in five rows that allow colored light into the worship space.
Architect Rudolf Schanty converted a former parish house from 1908 into this church, which opened in 1958. The transformation reflected the desire to repurpose an existing structure for new religious purposes.
The name refers to the Gutleutviertel district where the building serves the local community. Worshippers and neighbors use the space for services and gatherings, creating a direct connection to the rhythms of daily life in the area.
The bell tower serves as an easy landmark to locate the building from different angles around the neighborhood. A coffee room and community space on the upper level provide areas for gatherings after services or meetings.
The congregation chose not to build a new representative structure and instead repurposed the old parish house for practical use. This decision shows an alternative approach to church building that valued functionality over ostentation.
