Hafenstraße 51 was built by the architectural firm AGI-Plan Rüping and completed in 1976 as the main postal administration building for Frankfurt, which earned it the nickname Post-Hochhaus. It later passed to the Commerzbank, which uses the tower today. A plan calls for redeveloping the tower together with the site of the neighbouring former postal distribution centre under the name Grand Central.
The building displays hallmarks of the International Style movement through its minimalist facade and emphasis on functional form. Its glass and steel exterior reflects the modernization priorities that shaped Frankfurt's development during the 1970s.
