Festhalle Frankfurt, Multi-purpose arena in Westend-Süd, Germany
Festhalle Frankfurt is a multi-purpose hall in Westend-Süd in the western part of the city center. The structure covers an area of roughly 5600 square meters (60300 square feet), with the glass dome rising about 40 meters (131 feet) at its center.
Friedrich von Thiersch designed the building, which opened in 1909 and carried the largest dome in Europe at that time. The hall served first as an exhibition space for trade fairs and was gradually adapted for concerts and sporting events after the Second World War.
The name recalls the building's original purpose as a hall for large assemblies and trade fairs in the early twentieth century. Today visitors use the structure mainly for concerts by international artists and corporate events, while the open interior beneath the dome makes the varied use easier.
The site lies next to the Frankfurt trade fair grounds and can be reached by the tram line that starts directly at the main train station. For events the interior is adjusted with movable grandstands so that either standing room or seated rows are created.
A network of moving walkways called Via Mobile connects the hall directly with the neighboring exhibition halls and the congress center without a detour through outdoor areas. Visitors can thus switch between buildings with dry feet even in bad weather.
